Legumes are so much more than just a protein source—they’re quiet powerhouses in our fields. From enriching soils with biologically fixed nitrogen to boosting biodiversity and resilience, they bring a whole suite of ecosystem benefits. As part of the legumES project, we’ve been following three very different farms across the Mediterranean to see how legumes perform under real commercial conditions. Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve observed so far.

LegumES researchers spent an inspiring day with Portuguese high school students, exploring the world of legumes – from farm to plate. Discussion on agroecosystem functions was followed by a visit to the local food market, where students identified different legumes, and spoke directly with stall owners to uncover interesting facts. The day ended with a

legumES researchers based at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research have just published a paper-reviewed in the high-impact science journal Nature Food, evidencing the critical roles that legumes can play in realising more-sustainable food systems. Consuming more legumes in-line with the Planetary Health Diet – could reduce premature mortality, nitrogen pollution and water demand.

As legumES enters its halfway stage, and 3rd year of activities, the number of scientific and applied Deliverable reports, science-peer reviewed publications, presentations, plus trade and press reports are appearing in ever greater numbers. What follows is only a snapshot of outputs, and you are directed towards our website, and our ‘Zenodo Community’ – where
To help optimise the benefits of locally-grown legumes, the legumES project is developing an “AgriToolkit” to help assess sustainability. In the Toolkit will be the “Ecosystem Service Navigator” to aid legume-centred decision-making. Also, a “Catalogue of Indicators” for ecosystem monitoring to help tailor best practices to local conditions. These tools are aimed to help farmers,

Across Europe, legumes are proving to be more than just crops—they are catalysts for system transformation. By enriching soils with natural fertility, reducing the need for synthetic inputs, and enhancing soil functions, legumes strengthen the foundation of sustainable farming. Legumes also help nurture biodiversity, supporting pollinators, beneficial insects, and wildlife that are essential for resilient
