Pilot Study 1: Exploring the Role of Legumes in Sustainable Cropping

The Hutton’s Centre for Sustainable Cropping (CSC) is conducting Pilot Study 1, focusing on the role of legumes in regenerative arable systems. This study compares conventional and regenerative cropping practices to assess the benefits of legumes as cash crops (faba bean), cover crops (white clover), and companion crops (vetch, white clover, and berseem clover).

Key objectives include:

  • Evaluating how faba bean crops support sustainable nutrient management.
  • Assessing the contribution of legume-based cover and companion crops to nitrogen supply and soil health.
  • Demonstrating the impact of legumes on ecosystem services, including biodiversity, soil structure, and crop yield.

Over 12-24 months, the study will measure key indicators such as soil nitrogen supply, carbon storage, pollinator activity, and agronomic efficiency. By providing practical, real-world insights, this research aims to guide farmers toward more resilient and sustainable cropping systems in Scotland.
